How to Support Small Business Without Spending A Penny!

Supporting Local Businesses

I know I most certainly can’t live without my favorite local spots and we shouldn’t have to. Fortunately, there are many ways you can support small business without spending a penny!

Imagine saying goodbye to your favorite local coffee shop, restaurant, or hair salon due to circumstances beyond their control. Imagine walking down the street to your neighbor’s flower shop to find it boarded up with a “closed for good” sign. It’s no secret that countless businesses have been pulverized by the pandemic, but small businesses have taken a serious hit. Nearly 100,000 establishments that temporarily shut down due to the pandemic are now gone for good.

Follow them on social

Simply staying up to date on re-openings, adjusted hours, and sales can be helpful for your favorite local spots. As a follower, you’ll have more opportunities to shout out local businesses (which could mean more customers for them,) and potentially give YOU the opportunity to score a great deal.

Like and share content

This is a BIG one. With many small businesses struggling to stay afloat, many of their often-already-small marketing budgets have disintegrated. Showing your favorite spots some love by shouting them out on social could help them gain new business and replace what was lost during quarantine, (and keep that Iced Caramel Macchiato with extra whip in your hand every morning.)

Tag them!

When you DO post, tag the business, tag your friends, tag your kids, and tag your wife. You can tag them if you’re excited about a sale or new merchandise, during a visit, or just to let them know you miss them. You can even tag friends that you think would like what that business has to offer.

Refer friends

Think about it. When your best friend says, “Wow, I went to this amazing new restaurant. They have the best pasta and breadsticks I’ve ever had. You’ve gotta try it!” you’re much more likely to add it to your weekend plans…and maybe every other day after that. A referral is one of the most powerful tools when it comes to making decisions on the businesses people will visit, so encourage your friends from in town and out of town to hit up your pièce de resistance when they’re around.

Small businesses are a huge reason why we love the cities we live in, and they help make them feel like home. Let’s do our part to support small businesses and keep local hot-spots going strong! Social media and referrals are huge tools that we can use to help our favorite places stick around for the long haul, so follow, like, tag, share, and refer away, and you if do have a penny to spend, treat-yo-self! 🙂
